Hydrophytum is a tropical Genus commonly referred to as ‘Ant Plants’ because of their relationship with ants in nature. In their native habitat, ants find refuge in the network of small holes that make channels in the tubers. If you were to slice them open it look slightly sponge-like. We have never seen ants make homes in any of the plants in this group however. There are 55 species in the Genus spread over much of South East Asia. They are epiphytic growers in nature. We prefer to grow them in sphagnum moss baskets but planted in a decorative pot works well too. Use a cactus type of media. The caudex will get quite large. Star shaped flowers are small and white and produce bright orange berries (seeds). Nice plants in 6” baskets.
